Definition of competitiveness for photovoltaics and development of measures to accompany PV to grid parity and beyond

PV competitiveness

Parameters for grid parity definition

In order to assess grid parity the market segments, which would then be considered for the analysis, were identified. Two aspects – the grid parity methods and the LCOE method have to be determined.

The grid parity definitions for PV and other electricity technologies were analysed as well as the parameters described in the models. Based on scientific publication the consortium reviewed the different grid parity methodologies and aligned on the optimal grid parity definition.
To determine the cost of electricity the existing methodologies of LCOE calculation and the parameters used in this concept were analysed.

Please find below the detailed report.

Grid Parity definition

“Grid parity” has been described as the “coming of age moment" for photovoltaics (PV), when electricity from PV will be cost competitive with that from conventional generation sources, without subsidies so that deployment will take off driven by economic fundamentals. You can find in the detailed report that follows a clear definition of the "Grid Parity"

PV Competitiveness Workshop

A workshop on the definition of PV competitiveness was held in Brussels on 30 January 2012.

Actors from the industry were invited to participate and exchange views on the definition chosen by the project consortium.

Roadmaps for PV grid parity in all target countries

The realistic roadmaps to PV grid parity were defined for the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the UK. Some analysis on MENA countries is also included.

In order to be able to derive robust and realistic roadmaps in each country, a careful selection, disaggregation and country-specific consideration of the key impact parameters and financial support schemes (and its empirical scaling) in the respective case is very important since they determine economics.

FREE TOOL! Simulation tool for the empirical verification of the roadmaps to PV Parity

This simple modelling tool is based on a user-friendly graphical user interface which allows for a much more comprehensive economic “trade-off” and sensitivity analyses of several key parameters determining PV grid parity in the target countries.

Please, download below the tool and the user manual, that will guide you through the steps:

  1. Check if you are running a Win32 or Win64  operating system on your computer here.
